Resumen

This paper deals with the risk and efficiency of water treatment plants (WTP) by means of a conceptual selection model (CSM) applicable to Brazilian communities of up to 45.000 inhabitants. Several factors, variables and indicators were studied to develop the CSM, forming 15 sublevels of selection which interconnection makes possible the progressively choice of the water treatment plants with higher sustainability likelihood, according to the input data (F), criteria (A), procedures (B) and selections (S) established in their structure. It was possible to conclude that: i) the evaluated WTPs have different reliability degrees in the removal of the risk, depending on the number of stages which belong to the system, ii) the definition of the limit values of the technologies
in the removal of risk was difficult since there is no register of such parameters in the literature and in the monitoring of
most WTPs analyzed, iii) the applicability of CSM is restricted to the WTPs that meet all the domain requirement of the model. However these requirements do not eliminate the design engineer from evaluating all forms of risk present in the water and analyzing the possibility of using other treatment techniques.
