Abstract
Introduction. Nowdays, the prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in the Mexican population and internationally has increased and become a public health problem, even though there is a lot of disseminated information in various ways about this subject. Objectives. To describe the actual situation of the information about STDs on young adults of the Tourism-Marketing Research faculty of the UABC Campus Tijuana. Material and Methods. We took a representative sample of the student population of the UABC Campus Tijuana, which included 168 students, and we asked them to answer a questionnaire with 48 questions that included general information about STDs, some myths and sources of information. Results and Conclusions. We found that there are some high indexes suggesting accurate general information on the subject (70-98%), but at the same time some significant misconceptions in a 10 to 34% of the population; more than 60% are unaware of the existence of the candidiasis, trichomoniasis, chancroid and chlamydia as STDs. Our study found some myths that are still prevalent among the population and we found that the school is the primary source of information for young adults.
