Resumen

El debate sobre el conflicto en Israel y Palestina comprende una amplia gama de factores políticos, militares, económicos y culturales. Este artículo se focaliza en analizar los diferentes determinantes y ritmos del desarrollo de las poblaciones judía y árabe y discute algunas consecuencias de la demografía sobre la perspectiva política del área de conflicto. Durante muchas décadas el conflicto en Oriente Medio se ha nutrido de tensiones fundamentadas en las identidades étnicas y religiosas que han favorecido o hasta determinado la importancia estratégica de las cifras en la evolución de los episodios conflictivos. A partir del análisis aquí presentado, se busca poner en evidencia que una evaluación sistemática de las tendencias demográficas resulta esencial al momento de entender no sólo la naturaleza de los problemas que quedan por resolver, sino también la necesaria formulación de una propuesta de políticas encaminadas a la normalización y a la paz.
