Abstract

Within the expression of Huaxteca sculpture it is possible to distinguish three clearly defined groups: those typically Huaxtec, the hybrids and those carved in foreign style. Executed on bass relief, the Lapida de la Calzada falls under the last grouping, wich importance resides in the location where it was discovered, Tabuco, ancient Tuxpan; as well as the representation of one-death and the corresponding one to war atl-tlachinolli, just as it appears in the teocalli of the Sacred War. The analysis of this sculpture from an archaeological perspective, the written sources and, codices and iconography, have pointed out that it is the representation of the wars of conquest taken to the south of the Huaxteca region by the mexicas, specifically against Tuxpan. The final discussion takes us to propose that we can be dealing with a representation that commemorates the indigenous century of such conquests.
