Abstract

The Costa Rican historian Guillermo Brenes Tencio discusses in this essay the development of Costa Rican life following independence, from August 31, 1848, during the government of Dr. José María Castro Madriz (the last Head of State and first President), when that country became a new free, independent, and united nation. As part of the official symbology adopted by the new Republic, Castro Madriz decreed the creation of a flag and a coat of arms. At the same time, September 15 was also institutionalized as the date of the new celebration of nationhood.
