Profile of the Man who Choose a Non-Scalpel Vasectomy in a Health Centre of Mexico City: 15 years of experience

Abstract

Objective: to identify the socio-demographic profile of the man who choose the non-scalpel vasectomy (nsv). Material and methods: descriptive, cross-sectional retrospective cohort study. 1 023 clinical records of vasectomized patients, were studied between 1993 and 2007 in the Health Centre “Dr. José Castro Villagrana” in Mexico City. Social, demographic, clinical, and surgical variables were included. It was made a measurement at the time of making the medical history. It was used a list of matching applied to records. Results: the socio-demographic profile was: average age of 33.5±7.1 years, number of living children from two to three, the average age of the youngest child 3.2 years, 81.5% of men were between 25 and 42 years, average years of conjugal union of 8.9±5.1, 82.5% were married and 15.2% were in common-law union. The level of education included high school to post graduate in 77.2% of the cases. Satisfied parity along with the level of education from complete junior high school, high school or technical level was the reason and most important condition associated to decide to perform the vasectomy, χ2=29.59, p<0.0009. Conclusions: the profile determined in this study may be useful to make decisions and to develop strategies for social marketing in health; thereby, candidates could be better guided for the nsv and the dissemination of this method of family planning would be done more effectively.
