Abstract

THE DESCRIPTION OF 97 ALGAL SPECIES IS PRESENTED: 2 RHODOPHYTA, 2 XANTHOPHYCEAE (2.0%), 8 (8.2%) CYANOPROKARYIOTA, 15 (15.5%) CHLOROPHYTA AND 70 (72.2%) BACILLARIOPHYCAE. FIVE SPECIES ARE NEW RECORDS FOR MEXICO. HABITAT CONDITIONS WERE RECORDED IN ORDER TO GENERATE INFORMATION FOR THE BIOLOGICAL KNOWLEDGE OF THESE GROUPS OF ORGANISMS, THAT ARE FUNDAMENTAL TO RIVER ECOLOGY. THE SITES STUDIED ARE RELICT HABITATS FOR THE VALLEY OF MEXICO BASIN AND THEIR FLORISTIC COMPOSITION INCLUDES ELEMENTS OF TEMPERATE AFFINITY; THIS DISTINGUISHES THESE SITES FROM THOSE PREVIOUSLY STUDIED IN CENTRAL MEXICO THAT HAVE TROPICAL AFFINITY. MAIN VISIBLE GROWTHS INCLUDES CYANOPROKARYOTA, CHLOROPHYTA, RHODOPHYTA AND XANTHOPHYCEAE. PRASIOALA MEXICANA GROWTHS HAD THE LARGEST DISTRIBUTION, BEING PRESENT IN ALL THE STUDIED STREAMS AND IN BOTH DRY AND RAINY SEASONS. CONCERNING LIFE FORMS, 17 SPECIES WERE EPIPHYTES, 57 PERIPHYTIC, 18 METHAPHYTIC, 65 EPILITHIC, 2 PLANKTONIC, 10 EPIPELIC AND 11 AEROPHILOUS.
