Hydraulic system impelled by air pressure for Octopus bimaculoides and O. bimaculatus maintenance
Main Article Content
Abstract
The marine recirculation systems used for the experimental and industrial cultures of commercial species, tend to displace water applying pneumatic energy produced by compressors or turbines to avoid the use of pumps. The most common systems are “airlift” that consists of moving the water contained in a tube injecting air from the bottom. The system described includes an internal compression chamber that functions as a piston displacing the water. The structure of the system is characterized by its functional simplicity, minimum maintenance and a preservation of the water’s physicochemical parameters. This last characteristic has made possible the subsistence of the Octopus bimaculoides and O. bimaculatus, their egg-layings and the study of the hatching of the juvenile and paralarvae respectively. The advantages are wide, as long as the scientist is in control, at all times, of the environmental factors of the place where the organisms are kept, to know the responses to the hypothesis of his/her research.
