Abstract

In this paper we inquire about the relation between multiculturalism and labor markets in mid-southern Mexico. Based on extensive ethnographic work conducted within the Tehuacan- Zongolica region and on theoretical considerations, we propose a debate on the contemporary uses of cultural differences. Given the convergence of constitutional amendments regarding labor and ethnic rights, we aim at showing a nexus between these two apparently unrelated issues, which is worth exploring. In order to do so, we criticize the politically correct forms of presenting fundamental differences among populations, seeking a deep change in its understanding as well as an agenda for its discussion.
