Abstract

Obesity is a chronic disease characterized by excess body fat, mainly abdominal, and is a growing global problem. It is multifactorial: genetic, familial, metabolic, psychosocial, and environmental factors are involved. Clinically, it usually begins in childhood and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality in adulthood, underscoring the importance of prevention. In Mexico, obesity is particularly worrying, with high rates of overweight and obesity in both sexes, which justifies intervention strategies. Globally, childhood obesity is on the rise, and it has been observed that one-third of children could be obese, implying a likelihood of persistence into adulthood. Body mass index (BMI) is used to identify obesity and overweight, with thresholds of 25 (overweight) and 30 (obesity) in adults; there are tables for children between 5 and 14 years of age, although their definition is less homogeneous globally. While excessive caloric intake and a sedentary lifestyle are key factors, family dynamics and emotional and behavioral problems also play a role. This article reviews the behavioral characteristics associated with feelings of guilt in childhood, considering some of the instruments used to measure their evolution.
