Abstract

Since the first Computer and Internet based learning developments, there has been a recurrent idea: the creation of reusable didactic pieces, developed once and used many times in instructional processes, called learning objects. These elements promised to constitute knowledge bases central to the operation of learning systems, given their possibility to be located by teachers and/or students, and to be reused according to several needs of courses or mentorship activities, allowing to support significant knowledge construction processes. Nonetheless, the implementation of strategies for building and reusing learning objects has not been a frequent practice in face to face or distance education scenarios, partly because of the lack of a viable methodology to follow, and partly because the analytic, prescriptive approach traditional in learning objects has not been accepted in some theoretical stances about learning. In this article an inclusive taxonomy of learning objects is proposed, compatible with objectivist and constructivist assumptions. Moreover, a multiple-staged learning object creation methodology is proposed, and the documentation needed for instructional design and development is illustrated.
