Abstract

The article reflects the preliminary results of an ambitious semantic investigation carefully examining the handling of the University's conflict by the main written media in the country. The framing the media has given the conflict seems to concentrate on two interpretative lines that, just as demonstrated by the investigation, are not able to fully cover its internal complexity. The first of these analytical lines maintains that the conflict is the "only" alternative Ieft to the University's community in face of the projects to transform the university from the highest spheres of the power structure. On the other hand, the second approach suggests that the student's dissent reaction is a result of an undesirable, unnecessary and inadequate "out" to the aggressive impulses and poorly directed energies of the University's student body. Both interpretations are biased and slanted. In this sense, the article maintains as part of its preliminary conclusions, journalism has not been able to overcome the temptation of giving the conflict a sensationalistic and distorting handling of the issues under consideration.
