Opinions and Expectations of the Judicial Branch and the Judicial Reform in Mexico

Abstract
This article examines citizens' perceptions of the judiciary in Mexico, as well as attitudes toward the 2024 judicial reform. The text uses data from a national public opinion survey conducted in September 2024 with 1,511 household interviews. The results show that citizens express average levels of trust in the judiciary and that there is a high degree of confusion about the functions of the judiciary and other institutions in the justice system. Regarding the judicial reform, although a majority support it, positions on the matter are marked by sociodemographic characteristics and electoral preference. Generalized ignorance about the structure and functions of the judiciary seem to condition citizens' assessments of the Judicial branch and its reform. The data provides evidence to understand public opinion regarding the 2024 Judicial Reform in the context of political polarization. It also warns that misplaced expectations regarding the effects of the reform could further erode judicial legitimacy if structural problems of access to justice, corruption, and independence are not addressed properly.
