Abstract

The perioral soft tissues change when braces are removed; probably this is caused by a neuromuscular adaptation. The objective of this study was to determine the possible cephfalometric changes in the soft tissues of the inferior third in the facial profile when the orthodontic appliance is removed. Craniolateral radiographs were taken before and ten days after removing the upper and lower fixed braces in 40 patients, both male and female, between 18 and 25 years old. The soft tissue measures were done using the analysis of Ricketts and Holdaway. The t Student and Wilcoxon test for paired samples were used for the data analysis. The results were statistically significant for the measures of Superior sulcus (Ss), inferior Lip (Li), Inferior sulcus (Si), Ss depth and Naso labial angle (ANL). In the Mentolabial angle (AML) there were no statistically changes. It was concluded that there are changes with tendency to retrusion in the inferior third of soft tissues, probably this is because the neuromuscular adaptation in such tissues.
