Abstract

A resin modified glass ionomer (RMGI) is proposed to use in fixing brackets, with all the benefits of glass ionomer and the mechanical properties needed for orthodontic treatment. The objective of this study was to evaluate the shear bond strength obtained with IVMR bonded brackets, with and without enamel etching, and also to compare them with self etching primer and a resin cement, the term shear bond strength will be used to talk about the resistance that presents the union bracket-resin to bracket debonded to the application of a traccional load. Thirty premolars were used and divided into 3 groups, brackets were bonded using IVMR (Fuj Ortho LC) with and without acid etching for the first and the second groups respectively and with a self-etching primer (Transbond Plus SEP) for the third group. For the first group a conditioner were used before bonding (Self Conditioner non rinse GC America). Shear bond strength was measured in the universal Instron Machine at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min. After making statistical analysis with ANOVA and Tukey statistical tests, it was determined that the brackets bonded to etched enamel with a resin modified glass ionomer and with self etching primer and a resin cement showed a higher shear bond strength than the ones shown by brackets cemented with resin modified glass ionomer without an acid etching treatment of enamel.
