Abstract

The article discusses the events that have been filed in recent years in the Caucasus and its significance for the balance of forces in the international political and economic arena. The wealth of natural resources such as oil and gas, and geo-strategic location of the area make it susceptible to the intervention of foreign powers interested in controlling it for profit. This dispute between players and West of the continent has become evident with the political problems in Georgia and South Ossetia, which have confronted Russia, United States, the European Union, among others, showing clearly the meaning of this region in the current era. In addition, the presence of North Atlantic Treaty Organization is a factor that has contributed to increase tension in the Caucasus, pitting the United States and Russia in areas such as military.
